In the Oklahoma festival shooting, one person was killed and seven others were injured.
The event drew about 1,500 people to Taft, which has a population of only a few hundred people.
One person was killed and seven others were injured in a shooting early Sunday at an outdoor event in eastern Oklahoma, where witnesses reported frantic people rushing for shelter amid gunfire. Authorities said a 26-year-old male was in custody.
Skyler Buckner was arrested and turned himself in to the Muskogee County Sheriff's Office on Sunday afternoon, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. According to the OSBI, those who were shot at the Memorial Day event in Taft, which is roughly 45 miles (72 kilometres) southeast of Tulsa, were between the ages of 9 and 18.
According to the OSBI, a 39-year-old lady was slain. The injuries sustained by those who were injured were deemed non-life threatening.
The OSBI initially stated that two kids were injured in the incident, but later clarified that just one juvenile was hurt.
Witnesses stated an argument preceded the gunfire, which occurred shortly after midnight, according to the agency.
"At first, we believed it was firecrackers," said Sylvia Wilson, proprietor of Taft's Boots Cafe, which was open at the time to accommodate the influx of people to the little town for the event. "At that point, people begin to flee and duck." And we were yelling at everyone... 'Get down! Get down!' Wilson recalled over the phone to The Associated Press on Sunday morning from the café.
The event drew about 1,500 people to Taft, which has a population of only a few hundred people. OSBI reported that members of the Muskogee County Sheriff's Office were present and quickly began offering aid.
Jasmayne Hill, who was working at a food truck during the event, told the Tulsa World, "Bullets were absolutely flying everywhere."
Hill claimed she and the food truck's owner, Tiffany Walton, dove to the truck's bottom to dodge the gunfire.
"We believe we're safe, but the bullets are going straight through the bottom of the food truck," Hill explained. "Thank God, they didn't hit us." When the gunfire rang out, Neicy Bates and her husband were operating another food truck. Most people "were just going to the ground trying to get out of the way," she told the Tulsa World. "Everyone was yelling." Some were attempting to flee. "Cars were exiting, trying not to collide," she explained.
Walton, who lives in Taft, said the community has staged a Memorial Day weekend carnival for decades.
Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt expressed his gratitude for the OSBI's "quick response to assist local police" on Twitter. Wilson estimates that the incident occurred roughly 100 feet (30 metres) from her café. She said that law enforcement had arrived earlier to assist with security and that cops responded immediately to the shooting.
"We're disappointed," Wilson said, adding, "but things are returning to normal... The threat is no longer present." Buckner was detained at Muskogee County jail on Sunday. He did not have an attorney listed in his jail records.
