According to the sources, the privileges provided to Ford India for the Sanand factory will be extended to Tata Motors as well. The two corporations have yet to execute a formal agreement about the takeover. When FE contacted Tata Motors and Ford India, both companies declined to comment.

The Gujarat government has approved Tata Motors' application to take over Ford India's Sanand car production factory. According to sources, the project has received a no-objection certificate from the state Cabinet.

According to the sources, the privileges provided to Ford India for the Sanand factory will be extended to Tata Motors as well. The two corporations have yet to execute a formal agreement about the takeover. When FE contacted Tata Motors and Ford India, both companies declined to comment.

Ford India had already stated that it would leave the country in September 2021. Despite major investments in the country, the corporation has lost more than $2 billion in operating losses in the last decade.


Last month, production at Ford India's Sanand facility came to a halt. In addition, the corporation maintains a facility in Chennai. The Sanand facility employs over 2,500 people, while the Chennai plant employs nearly 2,600.

While the Tata Group has been in talks with Ford India, as well as the state governments of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, for quite some time now about taking over both of the latter's factories, the unions at the Chennai and Sanand plants have demanded job protection in the case of such a transfer.


In February 2022, Ford India was one of the 20 firms chosen for performance-linked incentives for electric cars (EVs).
