The Rohingya, who number 31 men, 23 women, and five children, were discovered on Dong island in Thailand's Satun province, which borders Malaysia.

Thailand announced on Sunday that it has rescued 59 Rohingya refugees, including children, from an island where they had been abandoned by people smugglers near the Malaysian border.

According to assistant national police commander Surachate Hakparn, the Rohingya — 31 men, 23 women, and five children – were discovered on Dong island in Satun province, which borders Malaysia.

"The boat driver informed them that they had arrived in Malaysia and that they had been left on the island for a few days before being discovered," he claimed. The island is a tourist destination but not populated.

Thailand has provided humanitarian assistance to the refugees, who have been detained for further questioning and will be prosecuted for entering Thailand illegally, Surachate added.
